The 2013 London Deir Yassin commemoration, April 9th, St John's Wood Church
The plaintive mourning dances of the Palestinians (above) and the music of Nizar al Issa (below left) contrasted poignantly with the powerful confidence of the acclaimed St John's Wood Church Choir (below right)
This was the fourth commemoration held at St john's Wood Church Previous events were in 2002, 2005 and 2007.
Tn the words of Vicar Anders Bergquist, and Churchwarden Deborah Stuart, the 2013 commemoration was "hosted for the Palestinian people".
It was co-sponsored by the Palestinian Mission to the UK and directed by Justin Butcher and Ahmed Masoud
Palestinian dancers of Al-Zaytouna carry olive sprigs to give to the congregation. The sprigs had previously been scattered round the altar as, after Deir Yassin, the Palestinian people were scattered round the world.
''The Speaker of the House' attends to the British MPs as they debate the massacre at Deir Yassin. This short drama, taken by Justin Butcher from the original Hansard record astonished many in the audience. "I never knew that" was a phrase heard a lot afterwards.
